This work didn’t start as a campaign. It started as a question.
How does an aging elephant with visible physical decline continue performing year after year, despite repeated concerns being raised?
What began as curiosity turned into research. That research led to documentation. And that documentation is now shaping a documentary in development.
I approach this subject the same way I approach storytelling — with compassion, clarity, and a refusal to look away.
ELEPHANTS
“LIVE on Between the Sheets Podcast!”
I had the opportunity to dive deep into the world of captive elephants—shedding light on:

-
Their Struggles: The emotional and physical toll of life in captivity, especially in circuses.
-
The Path to Freedom: Stories of these majestic animals making their way out of circuses and into more humane settings.
-
The Surprising Truths: Lesser-known, need-to-know facts about elephants that reveal just how remarkable they are.
The USDA’s Role in Question
We didn’t shy away from tough topics, including the Department of Agriculture/USDA's role (or lack thereof) in animal welfare. Their involvement in regulating these animals’ conditions raises serious questions about welfare standards and oversight.
Special Thanks to Gaye Ann Bruno
Thank you to Gaye Ann Bruno for this powerful platform and discussion. This conversation is a must-hear for anyone who loves animals and wants a deeper understanding of the complexities of elephant welfare.
Nosey: A Precedent

Nosey In circus (prior to 2017)

Nosey in sanctuary after 2017 transport
In 2017, an elephant named Nosey was removed from a traveling circus after a local animal control officer intervened during a documented transport incident.
The Current Case: Betty
Betty is a 57-year-old Asian elephant currently housed at Wilstem Wildlife Park. Over more than a decade, repeated documented welfare concerns have been raised regarding her mobility and long-term suitability for travel and performance.
Unlike Nosey’s case, intervention has not resulted in sanctuary placement.

This case has become the foundation of a documentary currently in development, examining oversight, accountability, and what humane outcomes could look like.
